What is Mohs Surgery?

Mohs surgery (pronounced “moze”) is a highly specialized treatment used to remove skin cancer. It’s named after Dr. Frederic Mohs, who developed the technique. It has the highest cure rate of any skin cancer treatment available today up to 99% for common types like basal cell and squamous cell cancers and is the treatment of choice for melanoma and other more rare types of tumors of the skin

How it Works?

We numb the area

You’ll be awake, but the area is completely numbed so you won’t feel pain.

We remove a thin layer of skin.

This layer is checked under a microscope right away. If we still see cancer, we go back and take another thin layer of only the affected tissue, sparing the normal skin.

Once the cancer is gone, we’ll talk about the best way to help the area heal stitches, a skin flap, or letting it heal naturally.

How it Works?

How Long Does It Take?

Each layer takes about an hour to remove and examine. Many people only need 1 or 2 layers removed, but it’s good to plan to be at our office for several hours just in case.

You’ll spend most of the time relaxing between steps while we process and examine the tissue.
