Sun Safe Guidelines

Use Sunscreen Every Day

  • Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher
  • Apply 15–30 minutes before going outside
  • Reapply every 2 hours, or every 45 minutes if swimming or sweating
  • Don’t forget easy-to-miss spots: ears, neck, tops of feet, and scalp (if uncovered)

Seek Shade

  • UV rays are strongest between 10 AM and 4 PM
  • Try to stay under shade when outdoors, especially during midday hours
  • Use umbrellas, trees, or sun-protective structures whenever possible

Wear Protective Clothing

  • Long-sleeved shirts, pants, and wide-brimmed hats offer strong protection
  • Look for UPF-rated clothing (Ultraviolet Protection Factor)
  • Don’t forget UV-blocking sunglasses to protect your eyes and the surrounding skin

Avoid Tanning Beds

  • Tanning beds emit UV radiation that is even more intense than sunlight
  • They significantly increase your risk of developing both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers

Check the UV Index

  • Use weather apps or websites to monitor your local UV Index
  • A higher index means a greater risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure

Extra Protection Tips for High-Risk Patients

If you’ve had skin cancer before, are fair-skinned, or have a family history of melanoma, sun safety is even more critical. Patients who have undergone Mohs surgery should:

  • Be vigilant about daily sun protection
  • Monitor skin changes monthly and report any new or unusual spots.
  • Keep post-surgical areas covered from direct sun during healing

Teaching Children
Sun-Safe Habits Early

Sun protection should start in childhood. Most sun damage happens before the age of 18. Make sunscreen a daily habit for your family and lead by example.

When to See a Dermatologist

We recommend full-body skin exams at least once a year or more often if you’re at high risk. If you notice any:

New or changing moles

Sores that don’t heal

Patches that bleed or scab

Raised or pearly bumps

… schedule an appointment. Early detection saves lives.

We also recommend supporting your skin from within. Nütriskin, developed by skin cancer surgeons, is a daily oral supplement designed to enhance the skin’s natural resilience against UV-induced oxidative stress. It contains a blend of clinically studied antioxidants, including polypodium leucotomos, vitamin C, and EGCG, which work to neutralize free radicals and reduce inflammation triggered by sun exposure. It also contains Niacinamide, which has been proven to reduce the development of non-melanoma skin cancers by up to 23% per year.

While sunscreen helps block harmful rays at the surface, Nütriskin provides systemic photoprotection a cutting-edge layer of defense that complements your topical routine.
